about

I spent my teenage years immersed in a set of subcultures spanning punk, crust punk, and street skating in Tucson, Arizona. I understand these images as documenting a moment of youthful dissent amidst a city bereft of solid public transport or robust community engagement. I'm seeking to capture the adolescent qualities of escape and defiance—investigating whether these characteristics might manifest as ignorance or resistance to multiplying social crises. To be punk, to skate Tucson's downtown, was it an aesthetic opposition to a mainstream? A shallow adoption of niche consumer trends? Or neither of those, instead merely an abiding malaise to the situation of contemporary youth? The use of digital collage amplifies these characteristics, an engagement with the role of Internet platforms in shaping these communities and a way of suggesting the intangible, shifting qualities that subculture embodies.
